'Nightmare' of £200k arson attack
Thursday, November 20, 2008, 07:30
The equipment was torched at SOS Skip Hire and Haulage Ltd in Dale Street, off Great Northern Terrace.
A digger and truck used to carry skips were completely wrecked by the blaze and two further trucks were seriously damaged.
But despite nearly a third of the firm's fleet being put out of action owners Shaun Dixon and Garth Heywood say they will still run at full capacity.
The family-run business, which has been operating for more than 30 years, is now being forced to hire additional vehicles.
"It's a complete nightmare," said Mr Dixon. "The insurance company is very good but obviously they won't pay out for the hire of vehicles so that's an extra expense.
"At the end of the day it's knackered us. We're going flat out at the moment and haven't really been hit by the credit crunch. But when it's so busy I really need those lorries.
"There's something going on round here. There have been a few incidents recently and it's very worrying."
Firefighters called to tackle the blaze were on scene from 8.30pm to midnight to subdue the flames and ensure the area was safe.
And the incident comes just a week after another vehicle at the firm's base went up in flames.
Nigel Chew (44), a manager at the business, said: "We were told it was a wiring fault at the time but now this has happened it makes you think again,"
"It's going to have a very significant effect on the business."
