Thursday, November 20, 2008, 07:30
He shoplifted food from the Co-op store in High Street, Navenby, near Lincoln, and walked out.
But as he did so, with an accomplice, the man pulled out what police believe was either a handgun or an imitation firearm.
No-one was hurt in the incident, which took place at 4.20pm on Tuesday.
But the gun was brandished in full view of a member of the public standing outside the store.
Lincolnshire Co-operative security manager Mark Foulds urged anyone with information to contact the police.
"We are very grateful that none of our staff were harmed during the incident, though they were obviously shaken by it," he said.
"As a matter of course, we do offer our staff counselling following any potentially violent incident."
The two suspects are believed to be in their late teens or early 20s.
Police do not believe they are not local.
Tracey Audiss (42), who lives on the High Street, said she had been shocked when she heard the news.
"It's terrible, it's awful – this is an idyllic place to live," she said.
"It's lovely here and I can't believe it's happened on our doorstep."
Anyone with information about the incident at should contact Lincolnshire Police on (01522) 558855.
